I’m here to tell you how important it is to choose the right clothing for your photo session! What you wear can have a huge impact on how you look and, more importantly, how you feel in your photographs. I want to give you the best photography experience and one of the things in doing so is making sure that you look your best on the day of your photo session. It takes a little planning, but I am here to make the process easier for you!!

I don’t think you have to spend a fortune on your clothing. I think there are several affordable options for any budget. I mean it’s totally fine to shop at Target, Old Navy and heck even Walmart, even Amazon! There is a variety of clothing for every single person of the family. If you want to go all out then of course, I have resources for that as well!

First, I like neutral/muted colors. I think they photograph better in my opinion. Also, you need to think about where you will be displaying your photos. What will they look like on your walls, where will you hang them, what types of frames will you be putting them in? Will you have them hanging all year long or seasonally? These are all things that go through my mind during outfit planning. I like to start with Moms outfit because we can so often be very critical of ourselves. I want the Mom to look and feel beautiful during the session.  I am here to make it my mission to help you curate a beautiful wardrobe for the whole family so that you have beautiful family portraits.

If there is a part of your body that you do not feel is flattering, such as your arms, then find a dress with a cap sleeve or regular sleeve. If you don’t like your tummy, find something that ties, or cinches everything in above the waist! Also, I’m here to tell you that a good pair of Spanx is life changing ha!! I always love maxi style dresses for photo sessions and love the look of them flowing in the photographs. Something with movement looks beautiful in photos.  If you really want to treat yourself get your hair and makeup done!! I sometimes suggest selecting Mom’s outfit first, and then choose for the rest of the family (I am sure this is the exact opposite order that you were thinking of doing! Lol)

Don’t dress the entire family in the exact same color. Avoid too many bold prints and patterns. Avoid clothing with visible logos. Do however coordinate colors and mix it up a bit! Let your personalities shine through. I think simple jewelry looks best. I like photos to look classic in timeless so that in 50 years when you look back you still love your photos!

This is one of my absolute favorite family sessions!! This is my friend Moriah, we worked together for her family photo session to plan the perfect outfits. Her children are so adorable, and I can’t wait to get them in front of my camera again! Notice how they coordinate with one another without being all “matchy-matchy” (is that a word?! Lol)
